Tanuki was the first restaurant that was opened in 1995. Tanuki is an Izakaya style restaurant. Izakaya originated from sake shops which allowed their customers to remain in the store to eat something while they were trying the sake. They are now very popular in Japan.
The style is informal and usually patrons share the food that they order and the food is traditional and delicious.
Tanuki was the first Japanese restaurant in New Zealand to have more then one sake on its menu, in fact it started with 40 different kinds and even now still has 30 types.
Tanuki also has a private function room that sits 35 people.

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT TAKE RESERVATIONS AT THE CAVE
Tanuki's Cave, our subterranean yakitori bar was open two years later in 1997. Yakitori literally means 'grilled chicken', but the Cave offers a wide variation of meats, seafood. and vegetable dishes. All grilled on bamboo skewers and basted with our special in-house sauce or grilled with salt.
Yakitori tastes great with beer and we recommend you try it with our Japanese Sapporo or Asahi beer on tap.
We also have a large selection of Kushiage which are breadcrumbed, deep fried morsels like pork belly or shitake mushrooms stuffed with chicken mince. This is served with a special savoury sauce.

Kura restaurant is modern style Japanese food with a fusion twist. Kura means "warehouse" in Japanese. The restaurant is situated downstairs in an old grain silo dating back to Auckland's early days when the Waihorotui creek flowed down Queen Street valley. This is still obvious with the large stone wall that supports Queen Street.
